The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), launched a training workshop on Wednesday in Nyala, South Darfur, focusing on the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law (IHL). The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen awareness of the humanitarian frameworks governing armed conflict while reinforcing the emergency humanitarian response.

The opening session was attended by Major General Dr. Saleh Mohamed Al-Mangabi, Head of the Training Directorate, representing the Commander-in-Chief of the Rapid Support Forces, alongside several senior directors and department heads within the RSF. Representing the ICRC was Mr Walter Genti, Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Sub-Delegation for Darfur.

The workshop aimed at enhancing knowledge of the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law, underscore the importance of compliance with humanitarian norms that safeguard civilians and other persons affected by armed conflict, and instil a culture of respect for international humanitarian law across all levels of operations.

The programme reflects the Rapid Support Forces' stated commitment to international humanitarian law and facilitating the work of  humanitarian organisations operating in relief sector. It also aims to strengthen the longstanding partnership between the RSF and the ICRC in disseminating the principles of international humanitarian law through specialised training and capacity-building programmes.

For his part, Major General Dr. Saleh Mohamed Al-Mangabi described cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross as a key pillar of the RSF's humanitarian strategy to alleviate civilian suffering. He affirmed the Forces' commitment to providing all necessary security guarantees and logistical support to facilitate the safe movement of relief convoys.

Major General Al-Mangabi further noted that the International Committee of the Red Cross is an independent, neutral, and impartial humanitarian organisation. He emphasised that close coordination between the RSF and the ICRC would enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian interventions, support the timely and equitable delivery of emergency assistance, particularly to the hardest-hit communities, and reflect the shared commitment of both parties to prioritising humanitarian considerations and the protection of civilians.

He concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and personnel of the Rapid Support Forces to respect human rights and enhance the principles of international humanitarian law.
